Questions, answered.
Whether you are looking for flexible legal expertise or considering joining the Altern8 network, find answers to the questions we are most often asked.
The two are not mutually exclusive.
An interim lawyer, by definition, joins for a defined period or purpose - for example, to cover an absence, manage a transaction, deliver a project, or provide additional capacity during a particularly demanding period.
A fractional lawyer provides similar ongoing senior legal support but only for part of the working week or month. They give a business access to experienced legal judgment without requiring a full-time hire, often managing a portfolio of multiple clients simultaneously largely on their own timeline.
So the models can overlap, and we can help structure the arrangement around what your business actually needs.
Flexible legal support is particularly valuable when you need experienced, embedded expertise quickly but the requirement is temporary, part-time, project-based, or still evolving.
A law firm may be appropriate on occasions where you need a formal external opinion, locally regulated advice, litigation representation, or a particularly large specialist team, though this method often proves expensive.
A permanent hire may make sense when there is a sustained, full-time requirement and the business is ready to commit to a long-term role, with enough time to account for a selective hiring process, an onboarding period, and a long notice period before having someone join the team. Altern8 can bridge the gap with a fast interim solution until the permanent process is finalised, while an Altern8 interim consultant can give you the benefit of their own expertise in appointing a long-term successor.
Many successful companies use a combination of all three, and an Altern8 consultant knows where to optimally draw the line between dealing with a matter themselves and instructing external counsel, optimising your legal spend.
Together, we can help you determine the most practical and proportionate solution.
Altern8 combines high-quality senior expertise with the flexibility of an independent consultant model. We maintain a carefully curated network, skewed heavily toward the most experienced and capable legal leaders and specialists, then match each requirement according to expertise, sector knowledge, working style, and capacity - not simply who happens to be on the market or who applies first.
We also manage the search, contracting, payment, and ongoing engagement process from end to end. This gives clients one accountable relationship while retaining the agility of flexible legal support. Our lean, technology-enabled operating model helps us deliver this efficiently and cost-effectively.
We build direct relationships with the lawyers and specialists in our network, many of whom the team has known well for many years. Our assessment considers their career history, technical and sector expertise, seniority, communication style, preferred working environment, and the types of assignments on which they are most likely to add value.
For each requirement, we look beyond the CV to assess the consultant’s suitability for the specific business, team, and challenge. We believe the best lawyers are the ones who are much more than simply lawyers - adding value through an entrepreneurial mindset, the ability to communicate effectively with the people running the business, and the ability to flexibly apply their years of experience to guide you through any challenge.
Relevant qualification, identity, right-to-work, and engagement checks are completed as appropriate before an assignment begins.
Timings depend on the specialism, location, working pattern, and complexity of the requirement, but flexible support can often be introduced considerably faster than a permanent recruitment process, often within a matter of days. Our consultants understand the demand for a quick solution and are used to embedding themselves quickly to hit the ground running in a new environment.
Our wide, established network allows us to identify relevant consultants quickly, while still applying the judgment needed to make a strong match. If a requirement is urgent, we will be transparent about what is achievable, prioritise immediately available options, and agree a practical timetable with you from the outset.
That is exactly where a flexible engagement can be most valuable. Support can be structured around a project, an initial trial period, a particular number of days each week, or a changing level of demand.
You do not need to predict the entire requirement at the outset. We can help establish a sensible initial scope and review it as circumstances develop. Support can then increase, reduce, or extend, subject to the consultant’s availability and the notice arrangements agreed in advance.
Yes. Our reach is not confined to the UK or to a single working pattern. We can identify consultants with relevant sector, market, and cross-border experience across different jurisdictions and time zones, whether support is required remotely, on site, or through a hybrid arrangement.
Where appropriate, overseas consultants may be engaged through an Employer of Record (EoR) or another compliant payroll and engagement partner. Each arrangement is considered individually. Where a matter requires advice from a lawyer admitted in a particular jurisdiction, the consultant can also work alongside suitable local counsel.
Yes. Altern8 consultants can work independently, either to establish a brand-new legal function or replace a departing GC or sole counsel, or as an integrated extension of an existing legal team. They can provide additional capacity, specialist knowledge, project leadership, or senior support during a period of change or challenge.
They also regularly complement the work of external law firms - for example, by coordinating instructions, translating advice into practical business action, and managing work internally. The objective is not to replace the support that is already working well, but to provide the expertise or capacity needed to close a particular gap.
Yes, in fact, we are uniquely placed to help in this scenario. We can provide an experienced fractional/interim legal leader who can assess priorities and manage immediate legal work, while creating the foundations of an effective legal function.
This might include introducing suitable processes and legal playbooks, managing external counsel, supporting contracts and governance, identifying legal risk, and helping the business understand what its longer-term team should look like beyond the scope of their own engagement.
Many of our lawyers have done exactly this in the past, often more than once, and are well-acquainted with all the challenges inherent in establishing a new legal function, and well-versed in all the tools and technology needed to streamline this process.
When the requirement becomes sufficiently established, we can also help define the permanent role and support the transition to a long-term legal structure.
Yes. Alongside Chief Legal Officers, General Counsel, and senior in-house legal specialists, our network includes expertise across related areas such as regulatory compliance, data and privacy, intellectual property, legal operations, legal technology, governance, and risk. We also partner with providers of interim and fractional consultants across the whole spectrum of C-suite functions and can connect you with an equivalent specialist for any executive support.
This allows us to consider the underlying business challenge rather than forcing every requirement into the shape of a conventional legal role. Depending on the brief, we may provide one specialist, a blended combination of complementary expertise, or a consultant who can work across legal and adjacent functions.
We agree a clear commercial structure before the engagement begins. This may be based on an hourly or daily rate, an agreed working pattern, a defined project, or another arrangement suited to the requirement - the key is flexibility.
The cost reflects both the consultant’s remuneration and Altern8’s management of the search, matching, contracting, payment, and ongoing engagement, so the figures are kept simple. Our direct consultant relationships and lean, technology-enabled operating model allow us to operate efficiently, helping clients access senior expertise without the overhead structure commonly associated with traditional legal delivery.
Before work begins, Altern8 agrees the scope, fees, expected working pattern, invoicing schedule, notice provisions, and payment terms with the client. We then put the appropriate contractual and engagement arrangements in place with the consultant, including compliant payroll support where required.
The consultant is paid directly by Altern8 under their agreed terms, while Altern8 invoices the client according to the commercial terms established before the engagement. This gives the client one straightforward commercial relationship without requiring them to contract with or administer the consultant directly.
We invest time at the outset in understanding the requirement, team, and working environment, reducing the likelihood of a mismatch. We also remain involved after the engagement begins rather than treating the introduction as the end of our role.
If something is not working, we ask clients to tell us promptly. We will speak with both parties, understand the issue, and determine whether it can be resolved. If the consultant is ultimately not the right fit, we will work with the client to identify an appropriate alternative, subject to the agreed engagement terms.
Still unsure what support you need?
Tell us about the challenge, transaction, or period of change ahead, and we will help you identify the most practical solution.
